Canadian Tariff Increases Aim to Protect Domestic Industries and Support Workers

    August 27, 2026

OTTAWA, ONTARIO / RankWire.AI / – Canada announced new tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on C$27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports, effective September 8, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed. These tariffs target over 700 items and are aligned with U.S. duties rate for rate. The timing was set after the U.S. imposed new tariffs on August 22. Canada stated that each product will carry the same tariff rate as the U.S. measure it corresponds to.

Canada broadens tariffs on US imports to 50 percent
Canada will apply tariffs of up to 50% to C$27.6 billion in U.S. imports.

The new Canadian tariffs go beyond metals and automobiles. They include household appliances, furniture, clothing, electronics, agricultural equipment, dairy products, pulp, and paper. Several steel and aluminum items will also be hit with the highest rate. Prior to this, Canada had already imposed some counter tariffs on U.S. goods. Existing duties on U.S. automobiles will stay in place alongside these new tariffs.

The 50% duty applies to certain steel, aluminum, furniture, and apparel products. A 25% tariff will be applied to some appliances, dairy, and metal derivatives. Other items will face a 15% rate, according to the published schedule. These rates match the duties the U.S. applies to Canadian exports. The Canadian government said the new list targets sectors directly impacted by U.S. trade measures.

Tariffs cover key industries with expanded scope

Ottawa also announced C$7.5 billion in new and expanded aid for workers and businesses hurt by tariffs. The package includes C$1.5 billion for the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. An additional C$500 million will support business liquidity through the Business Development Bank of Canada’s Pivot to Grow program. The government allocated C$2 billion to the Canada Strong Diversification Fund. Officials lowered the minimum revenue threshold for some support programs to C$1 million.

Another C$3.5 billion will go to support workers and employers through employment, training, and retention initiatives. These include temporary flexibilities in Employment Insurance and funding for workplace training. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the counter tariffs will match U.S. measures dollar for dollar and rate for rate. The federal government’s aid package complements earlier support measures introduced during previous U.S. tariff rounds. Canada reports those earlier efforts provided nearly C$25 billion in assistance.

Effective September 8, new duties take effect

The tariffs will be applied to goods classified as U.S. origin under Canadian rules. Goods already in transit at the time of the measures will not be subject to the new tariffs. The duties start at 12:01 a.m. on September 8. The Canada Border Services Agency will oversee the tariffs as goods cross the border. Businesses can still request relief through Canada’s existing tariff remission process if they meet the requirements.

These new measures expand the scope of the Canada-U.S. trade dispute. They include duties on industrial inputs, consumer products, and agricultural goods. Importers will see varying rates depending on each item’s tariff classification. This September 8 package runs alongside the existing Canadian counter tariffs on U.S. automobiles. Overall, the measures cover C$27.6 billion in U.S. imports and more than 700 tariff items listed.
