Young Vapers and Their Future Health Risks: Who Gains from Awareness?

    August 21, 2026

LONDON / RankWire.AI / – A comprehensive analysis of e-cigarette use among teens reveals increased dangers of serious lung conditions. The study also finds a strong link between youth vaping and later cigarette smoking, as published Thursday. Reviewing 81 international studies in Archives of Disease in Childhood, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health confirmed that young vapers at risk of breathing issues and becoming smokers often report persistent coughing, wheezing, chronic bronchitis, and severe asthma.

Study shows young vapers at risk of breathing problems early
Health experts warn young vapers at risk of breathing problems and becoming smokers.

This landmark review points to growing clinical evidence that e-cigarettes act as a gateway to traditional cigarettes for teenagers. Professor Will Carroll, a co-author, said vaping should not be seen as a harmless phase of youth. He cited clear links to nicotine addiction, lung damage, and subsequent cigarette use. Health officials also noted a tenfold increase in youth experimentation and regular e-cigarette use over the past decade. Around 20% of British teenagers aged 11 to 17 have tried vaping.

Besides breathing problems, the review identified other health risks linked to adolescent vaping. Researchers found evidence of vaping-related poor oral and dental health, such as mouth inflammation, ulcers, and dry mouth. They also highlighted mental health concerns, including increased anxiety and depression. Pediatric cardiologists and researchers expressed serious concern over the long-term toxic effects of flavor chemicals and heavy metal aerosols on developing organs in teenagers.

E-Cigarettes Connected to Ongoing Asthma Flare-Ups and Bronchitis

Following the findings, public health advocates urged the government to accelerate the full enforcement of measures outlined in the Tobacco and Vapes Act. These include mandatory plain packaging, relocating vaping displays in stores, and banning flavor names that mimic sweets, desserts, or candies. Representatives from Asthma + Lung UK stressed that child lung health suffers due to aggressive industry marketing. They called for strict limits on flavor options available to youth.

Dr. Mike McKean, Vice-President for Policy at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, stressed that while more long-term data is still coming, current clinical evidence calls for immediate policy action. Public health officials pointed out that although e-cigarettes might help adult smokers quit, they must not become a gateway for non-smokers or minors to start nicotine use.

Study of 81 Research Papers Sheds Light on Youth E-Cigarette Trends

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson reaffirmed the government’s goal of a smoke-free generation by curbing youth vaping through legislation. They confirmed that regulations will adapt as new scientific evidence emerges to prevent targeting children with marketing tactics. Public health groups reiterated the need for strong protections for young vapers at risk of breathing issues and smoking initiation.

Medical groups continue pushing for restrictions on marketing, flavorings, and sales outlets. They emphasize that preventing initial nicotine addiction in adolescents is crucial for reducing long-term respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Government bodies are expected to review the panel’s policy suggestions during upcoming parliamentary discussions.
