Northwestern Ontario Communities Gain from Lifted Fire Restrictions and Travel Bans

    August 21, 2026

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Extended forestry restrictions in Ontario came to an end early Thursday. Heavy rainfall across the region helped reduce wildfire threats significantly. The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the regional restricted fire zone and the backcountry travel ban were officially lifted at 12:01 a.m. This decision ends weeks of strict outdoor burning bans that were put in place to prevent wildland fires in the Northwest Area.

Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted
Highway maintenance crews clear public roadways to restore regional transit and emergency access.

Officials from provincial fire management confirmed that valid burning permits are now valid again. This allows outdoor fires such as campfires, recreational burns, and fireworks to be lit under normal safety rules. Thunder Bay municipal authorities said that local fire bans would also end at 5:00 p.m. Thursday. They reminded residents that municipal permits are still required for outdoor fires. The lifting of restrictions was driven by the cool weather and widespread rain, which greatly reduced available dry fuel for fires.

Restrictions on Fire Zones and Travel to End Across Northwestern Ontario

Along with the end of burning restrictions, emergency coordinators lifted local access restrictions in Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation areas. Transportation agencies confirmed that major roads, including Highway 527 and Highway 811, are now fully open to traffic. This allows residents displaced by the fires to return home and restores normal commercial and recreational travel on key routes.

Ontario Forest Fires tracking systems showed that orders related to major fire groups, such as Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were revoked at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Earlier evacuation alerts affecting the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border were also canceled after safety reviews confirmed that containment was successful and threats around the perimeter were minimized.

Regional Fire Restrictions Lifted Early Thursday

Even with these restrictions removed, provincial fire officials stressed that firefighting teams continue to monitor and manage remaining remote fires. Emergency crews warn that while immediate safety risks have lessened, residents still need to be careful when lighting fires on dry ground. Environmental agencies will keep tracking humidity and lightning activity to adapt fire hazard levels during the summer fire season.

Leaders in northern communities expressed their support for the rescinded orders. They highlighted that the reopening of access helps local outfitters and tourism businesses. The provincial government thanked residents and visitors for following restrictions during the critical fire danger period. As the fire zone and travel ban restrictions are fully lifted, officials encourage outdoor enthusiasts to stay compliant with fire regulations and stay safe.
